The training I receive at Crossfit Vancouver has allowed me to implement the Crossfit protocol into our competitive gymnastics program and all our athletes are stronger and faster because of it.
The results our young children have received has been nothing short of incredible.
I feel very fortunate to have found Crossfit Vancouver and their coaches training program.

Its been apparent to me since I started training at Crossfit
Vancouver two and a half years ago that the physical gains from
Crossfit programing are unparalleled in the fitness industry and in
cross training for sport. As a former champion Highland Dancer, I
sometimes wish I had found this program while I was still competing, but I am glad I can now use its principals to help my students and improve the next generation of athletes.

I am 51-years-old and I know a bit about this field as I teach physical conditioning at Simon Fraser University (have done for 25 years). I have always played and coached sports that have a high intensity anaerobic component to them (i.e. soccer, tennis, squash, and rugby). From my reading of the literature and "on-field experience" I always maintained that high intensity was the key to a successful program. I also knew that my sports provided great conditioning, but not enough on their own….I had to lift weights, I had to be stronger. But I always failed to sustain my strength training programs and only seemed to work on flexibility after my latest hamstring pull (funny how that works). I would do my three sets of 10 reps for 8-10 exercises; I would even add variety by super-setting and designing circuits. But the variety and nature of that training was not as stimulating as my beloved "sports with a ball and an opponent".
I was then asked by the new director of my university department to review the CrossFit Foundations article. I was like a kid in a candy store reading that article. Here I was reading exactly what I believed to be true from my knowledge and experience. CrossFit is an incredibly creative and effective program. I thought I knew what variety was until I found CrossFit. I was mistaken. One of my favourite quotes from the CrossFit philosophy is "strive to blur distinctions between "cardio" and strength training. Nature has no regard for this distinction." If you're studying in this box (Crossfit Vancouver) you're in the right place.

May 2009 I was introduced to a different form of training, well a whole new sport in itself really. CrossFit began in California and has been storming the world ever since. In May 2009 CrossFit Vancouver was willing enough to take me under their wings and teach me the ways of this new sport. Being an ultra endurance athlete I had my doubts of the promise CrossFit would give me for my performance as an endurance athlete. Nonetheless, I quickly fell in love with going to CrossFit workouts. I would attend CrossFit between 2 and 3 times a week amongst my other training (mostly long endurance workouts…putting the miles in). CrossFit was a fresh of breath air with quick snappy workouts. I felt pain in a completely new way. My first test of my improvements was a 6 day adventure race in Sweden July 3 2009. This race was to be completed in teams of 4 where all teammates complete everything together. Most teams consist of 3 males and a female but ours was different, we had three females and a male. My team consisted of three Americans and myself called the Yogaslackers.
We began the race in a town called Sundsvall up in Northern Sweden. The complete race was a total of 1069km to be completed in less than 6 days using a large variety of sports. Our team began the race with high hopes for a good finish, we all felt strong but also had never raced together as a team beforehand. The events were pretty wild considering sleep deprived endurance junkies were going to complete them. Mountain biking, white water kayaking, river boarding, rafting and canoeing, mountaineering, inline skating, ziplining, sailing, rock climbing to name a few of the events in the race. Not only is adventure racing a very physically demanding sport but it requires an unbelievable amount of mental strength as well. In a 6 day race anything can happen (good and bad) and each team member needs to keep a strong mental game going (despite fatigue, distress, diet, fear, etc).

Crossfit has dramatically changed the way I look at fitness. As a soldier, I need to be fit enough to deal with unexpected events, and just running and doing weights isn't adequate. Once I started Crossfit, I knew I had found the best all-round fitness program in existence. It was amazing to see specific strength gains and personal records in my old lifts, like bench press, come without doing regular bench presses! When you're Crossfit, every challenge that life throws at you seems easier to conquer. I now use Crossfit techniques in all the physical fitness training I plan for my soldiers, and we frequently use it in team-building ways. The expert coaches at Crossfit Vancouver were instrumental in getting our Crossfit program off the ground, and it has since taken off, and been emulated by other regiments in the Army.

I love Crossfit Vancouver, the people are amazing. As an elite athlete it is always nice to have something different in your training, something that gives you that edge on the other competitors, I really think what Crossfit has taught me, has helped me in that this year. So thanks to them! Love you all!
